Give a home to local historical documents.
The Pinelands Writers’ Circle, established in 1959, has two boxes of materials, containing the history of the Circle since inception. They would like to the collection in a location accessible to anyone who may want to refer to it. The Pinelands Library is not able to accommodate the collection. Are you able to help by offering a home to this local historical collection? If no home can be found, the documents will have be destroyed. Contact the chairman, Ray Hattingh, on 021 592 1279

The days are now numbered for the the Athlone Power Station cooling towers. Final preparations for demolition are being made by the contractors and the grand event is now expected to be Sun 1 August.
At a recent Ratepayers Association meeting, residents living near the cooling towers expressed concern about possible clouds of dust or windows shattered by the blast. The Ratepayers’ Association has received an application from Golf Estate and Property Investments Trust to hold a party at Pinelands Soccer Club to watch the demolition on Sun 1 August. It is proposed to have a DJ and live band playing from 10:30 am. to 5pm with about 5,600 guests and a liquor licence. The Association is concerned about the effect on neighbours living only 150 metres away, plus problems of parking, crowd control, sanitation, cleaning up, etc. Please send your views about this party and any other matter to pinelands.ratepayers@gmail.com |

Tomato Tarte Tatin
Serves 4
|
 |
|
Ingredients
• 800g Rosa or cherry tomatoes
• 45ml balsamic vinegar
• 2 garlic cloves,peeled and finely chopped
• 60ml olive oil
• 1 bunch spring onions
• 125g granulated sugar
• 45g grated parmesan cheese
• 250g puff pastry
• Basil leaves to garnish
• Salt & pepper
Method
• Preheat oven to 200C. Cut tomatoes in half and roast in oven with the vinegar, half the olive oil, salt, garlic and pepper until soft and wilted. This takes about 45 mins.
• Chop the spring onions and sauté in a little of the olive oil till soft.
• Line a small ovenproof dish with greaseproof paper Heat the sugar with four tablespoons of hot water over a low heat, stirring until dissolved. Raise the heat and boil the sugar without stirring until the syrup turns golden brown. Pour the caramel over the base of the lined dish.
• Arrange the tomatoes over the caramel. Add the spring onions, the topping must be tightly packed. Sprinkle the parmesan cheese over the tomatoes and spring onions.
• Roll out the puff pastry and cut a circle slightly larger than that of your dish. Cover the tomatoes and spring onions with the pastry. Tuck the edges in well around the side of the tin. Prick the pastry to allow the steam to escape during cooking. Bake until the pastry is crisp and golden (30-40 mins).
Allow the tart to cool for 5 minutes before turning out.
• Run a knife around the edge of the tart, place a warmed dish over the top of the tin and turn upside down and out onto the dish. Peel off the greaseproof paper and serve warm topped with fresh basil leaves.

Pinelands Library User Survey
Pinelands library would like to thank everyone that participated in the survey.
Your input will allow us to improve our service. We will keep you informed of the results.
With sincere thanks.
Pinelands library staff
Pinelands Library is moving to a new library system on 10 August 2010
|

Fri 2 Jul • 15:45 - 16:45 (4-8 years)
Storyhour
Wed 6 Jul • 10:15 - 11:00 (2-4 years)
Moms & Tots Storytime
Thur 8 Jul • 10:00 - 11:00 (4-8 years)
Games Hour: compete and score!

|
|
What does this mean for you?
• The library will be closed from 1 to 7 August for staff training
• On 10 August the library will reopen and start issuing books on the new system (Brocade).
• No books will then be issued on BookPlus. All patrons will need PALS membership cards. Unfortunately BookPlus membership cannot be transferred to the new system and we all have to complete new membership forms. This includes the library staff! If a patron is not in possession of a PALS membership card, a new membership form must be completed.
• Please bring the following with you:
ID, Proof of residence, 2 contactable references
We are very excited to welcome you on the new system and request that you fill in a new membership form as soon as possible. The staff is waiting to assist you!
For questions or queries:
email: samantha.christians@capetown.gov.za
web: www.pinelandsdirectory.co.za/library
|
Why we need a new system
• BookPlus is no longer able to deliver an effective service to the community. The terminals and system is old and cannot be updated.
• Patrons will be able to access the system from the internet and do renewals of their own books
• The catalogues of not only Bookplus but also PALS library systems can be searched. This will provide access to more library materials. Some catalogue titles will have book reviews to make selection of books easier and more fun!

Special Ratings Area: At the General Meeting held on Wednesday 2nd June, Taffy Roberts discussed the Special Ratings Area for which he had received a very positive response, but he needed to update his 2004 database and gave the assurance that it would be used solely to gauge public support for a Special Ratings Area. His e-mail address is taffyrob@st_consulting.com
Crime: Inspector Louis Waters, SAPS Operational Commander, reported a number of thefts from cars and urged people to ensure that they left nothing in their cars to tempt thieves to break in. Driveways should be well lit to prevent cars being broken when parked there. He urged people to join sector patrols to combat crime, particularly roof break-ins which had begun in October - a danger month.
Flowers vs. Mowing: By a small majority the audience voted in favour of mowing the verges even in the spring flower season, but it was agreed that the flowers should be left to grow in Forest Drive and Juliana Veld.
Logan Way: There was unanimous agreement that Logan Way should be one way from Sheldon Way to Forest Drive, so that parking should be left in and left out. Adequate parking bays for delivery vehicles on the left would make unloading much easier. It was suggested that Glen Roy should also become one way from Forest Drive.
Howard Centre: Complaints have been received that the tiles in the Centre are slippery and hazardous for the elderly. Coin security vans parking in disabled bays have been causing great inconvenience, particularly to Helen Keller transport.
Riverside: The paths along Elsieskraal were still unsatisfactory and Pinelanders are asked to contact the Ratepayers’ Association about potholes, broken bricks, etc.
Demolition of Athlone Cooling Towers:
