The Wheel of Excellence at the Waterfront
There's a new ferris wheel attraction at the Waterfront entrance (near the City Lodge). It's a fun ride with great views from the top, including this view of the stadium.

Is that a dog up that tree?
Aidan Butler sent in this picture of his dog Percy, who loves to climb trees down at the canal. He can go even higher than he is in this picture. He must give some cats a real scare to have a dog follow them up a tree.

What is this bird?

Carol sent us this picture and asked if anyone can identify this bird for her.
I'm no expert but my wife reckons it's a Hoopoe (upupa epops).
Anyone out there able to tell us more?

"This little bird was sitting in my garden this afternoon. I have not seen one like this before. Can some-one identify it please? Thanks Carol"

Rene sent us an email to comfirm that Carol's bird is an African Hoopoe.

June Wells reports: "It's definitely a Hoepoe. we used to see a lot of them in our garden; usually in pairs"

Cycad Fruit

A cycad in our garden surprised us when it suddenly produced fruit for the first time. This cycad is one of the more common varieties called Encephalartos natalensis. The male plant produces pollen and the female plant produces the seeds. Can anyone identify whether this is a male or female plant?
Did you know that the cycad is a protected species and that under the new legislation you require a possession permit.
Permits are available from
The Cycad Society
